This series of work concerns opening and expanding consciousness. A clearing can be a natural opening in a forest, or it can be an imposed human intervention. This dialectic between effort and passivity in bringing about change is central to my art-making process. These pieces start with a found object and are layered with paint. Then the surfaces are “excavated” by sanding, removing pieces, or pulling tape away to reveal the form underneath.
